Many students come to school expecting to sit at their desks for hours on end. But the children at Luling Elementary School in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, where the motto is 鈥渆xpect more 鈥 achieve more,鈥 come to school expecting to run and dance alongside their teachers 鈥 as they learn and gain greater confidence in their abilities.
It all started with two educators at the school, speech therapist Dottie Watson and reading interventionist Dana Dufrene, who would meet up at 5 a.m. most days for a shared morning run.
They realized that for their students, this type of physical activity was just not an option.
鈥淭he kids live between chemical and nuclear plants,鈥 Watson said, according to . 鈥淚f you鈥檙e poor and live in New Orleans, there are still resources, like recreation centers. If you鈥檙e poor in a rural area like we live in, there鈥檚 not as much.鈥 Many of the children are from single-parent households, and some have parents who are incarcerated. In many of the families, parents work multiple jobs. All this, Watson said, makes for very limited opportunity for physical activity outside of gym class.
But then, Dufrene and Watson learned about , a nationwide organization promoting physical fitness. With the group鈥檚 guidance and resources, Watson and Dufrene founded the LES Running Club 鈥 LES standing not only for the school鈥檚 initials but also for Loving Every Second, because, Dufrene said, 鈥淏efore anything we taught [the students], they would always know we love every second of our time with them.鈥

Many LES kids now race in local competitions hosted by the New York Rising Road Runners 鈥 an experience that has shown them there鈥檚 nothing they can鈥檛 do.
鈥淭hey know they can run a race and do well! Do anything! There are no barriers for them,鈥 said Watson.
