My interest in healthcare started when I was a kid. My cousin is a nurse, and seeing the work she did made me want to do the same. I also grew up helping my mom take care of my little sister, Lotus. Caring for her showed me that I have a heart to help others, and that has stayed with me ever since.

At BELIEVE Academy in St. Louis, I have the chance to explore that passion in real ways. Our charter school offers programs and experiences that introduce students like me to different healthcare careers and industry certifications. One of my favorite moments is when the Barnes-Jewish Hospital team brought in real organs for us to study. I even got to see a baby’s heart up close.

During my sophomore year, I observed a hernia surgery at a BJC hospital. I watched a surgical robot with finger-like instruments help the surgeon make the repair. I also visited the hospital to see how CT scans and MRIs are done.

These experiences sparked my interest in both nursing and radiology. I’m drawn to the way nurses provide bedside care to patients. Seeing CT and MRI machines in action showed me how radiology professionals use technology to diagnose and treat illness. My Health Careers pathway, especially during my freshman and sophomore years, taught me the importance of teamwork, empathy and attention to detail. It also helped me understand that healthcare takes more than knowledge and technical skills. It takes patience, communication and a strong commitment to helping others.

Of course, I have to take regular coursework, as well. My schedule includes AP Government and Politics and AP Precalculus as well as Health Careers and Nutrition. I鈥檒l soon start taking dual enrollment courses with St. Louis Community College.

In the future, I plan to keep exploring both nursing and radiology so I can decide which career best matches my strengths and interests. Whichever path I choose, I want to be a healthcare professional who makes patients feel safe, respected and cared for. That goal is also why I want to minor in social work in college.

Dedicating myself to a career pathway, doesn鈥檛 mean I can鈥檛 participate in regular school and community activities. I participate in clubs and volunteer in my community. At my church, I serve as a greeter and help with the food pantry. I also play volleyball and run track. I also enjoy fashion and cosmetology. Even with little time between activities, I work hard to balance my academics, athletics and hobbies.

I believe that helping others, whether through medicine or service, is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. As I continue my education, I look forward to learning more about nursing and radiology and growing into the caregiver I want to be.
